San Miguel Allende is a gem of a 17th/18th century colonial town in the mountains of central Mexico at 6,000 feet 3.5 hours drive from Mexico City.
The protected historic centre of San Miguel is about 1 mile square and is beautifully preserved. My house is three minutes walk from the central plaza of this central district, yet in a quiet area. The city is full of beautiful buildings, stunning churches and the Guadiesque cathedral. There are a plethora of excellent restaurants in the central district and all shops that one might need. There are two fascinating food and generalk markets in town and an amazing market each Tuesday on the edge of town where one can buy anyhting from cars to fish and jewellry to furniture. There are two excellent supermarkets on the edge of town.
There is a wondeful cultural scene in San Miguel with year round classical music concerts, theatre in English and Spanish, jazz, flamenco and mariachi bands everywhere.
Shopping for souvenirs ofers a huge choice at very cheap prices and there is stunning jewellry at bargain prices. The cost of living is about a quarter of what it is in the US, and a fifth of that in Europe.
The poulation of the city is about 80,000, of which about 10,00 are expatriates, mainly Americans and Canadians. As a rsult most Mexicans you meet in central San Miguel involved in services speak at lest some English. You do not need to speak Spanish to get by efectively. The Mexicans are charming, polite and helpful. San Miguel is very low on crime.
There are sevaral hot springs within a few mles drive where one can take the waters and eat and the the great pyramids and other attractons of Mexico City are an easy day trip, and there are many organised tours from San Miguel. It is not neccesary to have a car to get around central San Miguel as it is so compact and walking around is one of the joys of being here. Taxis are cheap, with a fixed fare of US$2 to go anywhere in the city.
There are several good gyms in the central area, golf courses and wonderful hiking in the mountains.
San Miguel is truly a unique blend of Mexican culture and life at its best and easiset to deal with. | |
