Our two family cottages on the beach at Malaekahana, the jewel of Oahu's rural northeast shore, are a throw-back to an earlier Hawaii. They face the refreshing Northeast trade winds and brief, sunshine-laced rain showers in a lush setting between the old sugar plantation town of Kahuku and the village of Laie. Just fifty minutes from Honolulu's airport, this beach hideaway blends colorful vintage fabrics, island floor coverings and casual country antiques which evoke a 1940s Hawaii. Set on a private lane off the main island highway, the property, on a secluded beach-front acre, is tucked between a classic ironwood grove and a lawn which stretches down toward a sandy swimming beach. In the two-story cottage, downstairs are a living-room, bathroom, kitchen and bedroom (two single beds) adjoining a large outdoor living area and lanai. Upstairs is a spacious master bedroom (king-size bed) with a large, airy bathroom and a lanai facing the sunrise, as well as a large, covered rain porch. The living room comfortably sleeps an additional person. The smaller, neighboring cottage is laid out with a small bedroom (queen-size bed), kitchen and bathroom, and an exceptionally large living area with two "hik'es" (queen-size sleeping beds), the entire front opening up onto the lawn and the sea. Features include BBQ, TV (except the smaller cottage), CD player, and mid-week light housekeeping. Activities available nearby include golf, tennis, horseback riding, jet-skiing, windsurfing, SCUBA diving, surfing and hiking. No pets, No smoking, please.
