Description
The Orson Welles Luxury View Estate was originally owned by one of Hollywoods golden boys, Orson Welles. Sitting just atop Sunset Blvd, this luxury 4 bedroom estate features a luxury pool with jacuzzi and a dry sauna, overlooking the stunning views of Hollywood and beyond below. This estate, originally built in 1928, and recently remodeled in several different sections, sits on top of its own roughly 15,000 square foot private knoll. The Cape Cod style home has an amazing Hollywood history. Sidney Toler, who played Charlie Chan in the late 30s and 40s built the house. After several years, the house was then inhabited by Orson Welles the great American filmmaker, actor, theater director, screenwriter, and producer, who worked extensively in film, theater, television and radio. Noted for his innovative dramatic productions as well as his distinctive voice and personality, Welles is widely acknowledged as one of the most accomplished dramatic artists of the twentieth century, especially for his significant and influential early work – despite his notoriously contentious relationship with Hollywood. Welles first found national and international fame as the director and narrator of a 1938 radio adaptation of H. G. Welles novel The War of the Worlds which was reported to have caused widespread panic when listeners supposedly thought that an extraterrestrial invasion was occurring. Although these reports of panic were mostly false and overstated, they rocketed Welles to instant notoriety. Orson Welles wrote Citizen Kane while living in this house. Citizen Kane (1941), his first film with RKO, in which he starred in the iconic role of Charles Foster Kane, is often considered the greatest film ever made. Several of his other films, including The Magnificent Ambersons (1942), Touch of Evil (1958), Chimes at Midnight (1965), and F for Fake (1974), are also widely considered to be masterpieces. Rita Hayworth, once the wife of Orson Welles also lived in the house with him. Other famous celebrities that have lived here since include spouses Ida Lupino and Howard Duff. Peter Lorre (Casablanca, Maltese Falcon and various Alfred Hitchcock films) lived in the house until he died in 1969. The house was then purchased by Paul Williams, the Oscar, Grammy and Golden Globe winning songwriter who wrote songs for Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra, Barbara Streisand, David Bowie who sold it in 2004. The current owner now makes this Hollywood landmark avaialble for the lucky others who want to experience its magic, charm and remarkable history.
